Clean Extreme goes for gold with DIY Week Awards

The accolades keep rolling in for our Clean Extreme range, with our Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt being named as a finalist in the prestigious DIY Week Awards.
The DIY Week awards look to reward forward-thinking companies, innovative products and inspirational people within the DIY, home improvement and garden sectors, so we’re very proud to see Clean Extreme named alongside some of the industry’s leading brands.

Our durable, scrubbable matt paint has been shortlisted in the ‘Decorating Products of the Year’ category after a rigorous judging process during which the awards scheme’s judges had the opportunity to test the product.

The shortlisting follows last year’s impressive news, when Clean Extreme was voted Best Trade Durable Matt in the Market by the members of the Decorators Forum, in recognition of its market-leading quality.

Crown Trade’s Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt has an impressive durability level of 10,000 scrubs and has been specifically developed to retain its flat matt appearance and ‘just painted’ appeal even after rigorous cleaning, making it ideally suited to high traffic areas such as hallways and corridors

Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt is part of our range of high-performance water-based paints which offers quick drying and low odour solutions to creating clean and hygienic surfaces.

Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt is the ideal choice for areas that are prone to damp and mould, and is highly resistant to stains. For even greater protection, our Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt, is enhanced with independently tested SteriTouch® silver ion technology to limit the growth of bacteria. For surfaces required to be clean with a bit of sheen, the full Clean Extreme range is also available in a high performance, stain-resistant, durable and washable Acrylic Eggshell finish.

Easy does it with Crown’s Clean Extreme product performance guide

We’ve launched a comprehensive new product performance guide to support our market-leading and recently expanded Clean Extreme range of high performance water-based paints.

Last year we extended the Clean Extreme range to arm professional painters and decorators with the tools needed to win the fight against stains, dirt, mould and bacteria. The new Clean Extreme product performance guide is packed full of information along with advice and tips to ensure specifiers select the most appropriate paint for each job and decorators get the very best finish every time.

The Clean Extreme range features a trio of high performance paints - Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt, Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt and Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt. For projects requiring a sheen rather than matt finish, the full Clean Extreme range is also available in a high performance, stain-resistant, durable and washable Acrylic Eggshell finish. Each product within the range has undergone rigorous independent scientific testing to strict industry standards and the new guide explains all about the tests as well as the results.

In terms of scrubbablity, we use the industry-recognised ISO 11998 test, against which all the Clean Extreme matt products achieved a Class 1 rating, equivalent to withstanding 10,000 scrubs before the paint film will start to break down. The guide also explains how we test Clean Extreme products for their resistance to common household stains including red wine, coffee, curry, shoe polish and various pens and markers. The same stain resistance tests are carried out on leading competitor products to ensure Clean Extreme remains ahead of the curve.

In addition, the product performance guide highlights the fungal tests used to put Clean Extreme mould-inhibiting paints through their paces. And explains how, with the addition of SteriTouch technology, Clean Extreme anti-bacterial products are 99.99% certified to kill bacteria, preventing bacteria growth on a surface.

2018 Apprentice Decorator of the year winner is crowned

Aiden Dearie has been chosen as the ‘gold’ winner of the 2018 Crown Paints Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition after a gruelling three-day challenge at the WorldSkills UK LIVE event at Birmingham’s NEC.

The final pitted our seven regional winners against each other as they undertook a timed challenge: completing a design which commemorated the 100 year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement, marking the end of the First World War. The artwork was devised by our in-house design studio specially for the competition.

During the final, each apprentice had 18 hours in total to complete the challenge under the watchful eye of our competition judges, including Kevin O’Donnell, our training manager, and Sandie Webster and Ben Deer, both former Crown Paints Apprentice Decorator of the Year winners.

Aiden, a 22-year-old apprentice who is completing his SVQ Level 3 Painting and Decorating at City Building Glasgow’s Queenslie Training College demonstrated excellent attention to detail. We were all impressed with his skill with both matt paint and trim work, and for completing the design well within the timeframe to an exceptionally high standard. He also scored highly in terms of his accuracy and finesse, and for his tidy working area.

The annual competition, which is now in its 39th year, is organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and sponsored by Crown Paints along with other industry leaders such as British Gypsum.

This year’s silver medallist was 19-year-old Thomas Nowell of Truro and Penwith College, while 19-year-old Bridie Kilby of Leicester College took the bronze.

The final was held as part of the SkillBuild event, organised by CITB as part of WorldSkills UK LIVE, at Birmingham’s NEC over three days from 15th to 17th November. It is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices and covers a range of skills and sectors from bricklaying and cabinet making to plastering and stonemasonry.

Crown brings colour to the Danish living room

The very best of Nordic design found a home at this year’s London Design Fair (September 20th -24th) in the shape of the stunning Danish Living Room, a unique exhibition space which showcases a selection of inspirational products, materials and styles that capture and celebrate Danish culture. We provided the attractive backdrop to the installation by donating 70 litres of Clean Extreme Scrubabble Matt in a range of complementary colours to help create a truly immersive visitor experience.

The Danish Living Room was hosted by the Embassy of Denmark in the UK to celebrate the country’s strong tradition of high quality and inspiration design. As part of the Hempel Group, which has its headquarters in Copenhagen, we were keen to pay homage to our Danish heritage by supplying the paint for the walls and ceilings of the stand.

With help from our in-house colour services and specification teams, the perfect colour palette was devised to decorate several individual areas of the stand, many of which have been further accentuated through the use of soft lamp lighting. Owing to the high-traffic nature of the show and the fact that the exhibition space was required to look its best throughout the duration of the event, we recommended high performance Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt. Combining high opacity and excellent colour vibrancy, Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt has been specifically formulated to retain its ‘just decorated’ appearance even after repeated wiping and scrubbing.

After a successful few days at the London Design Fair, in which time the Danish Living Room enjoyed hundreds of visitors, the walls and ceilings needed to be painted back to their original colour and we assisted once again by supplying Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt. As the exhibition space is used for many different events, the long-lasting and high quality finished offered by Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt will not only help keep the venue looking cleaner and brighter for longer but will also help reduce future maintenance requirements.

Crown Paints forecasts next season’s hottest colour influences

Our very own colour experts have unveiled three new colour trends which are set to influence colour schemes for the next season.

With a real passion for colour, our panel of six colour experts comprises consultants, specialists and designers. Drawing on their collective experience working across different sectors from interior design to fashion, the team determines key colour influences each year by assessing and interpreting current and future global trends. Their aim is to inspire architects, specifiers and building owners alike to feel confident in choosing colour to create statement colour schemes.

This year our colour experts have identified three core colour trends; ‘Saturated’, ‘Washed’ and ‘Midnight Garden’, each with its own distinctive look. The three trends include a palette of signature colours and supporting accent tones together with more neutral hues and is about how the colours interact with each other together to create a fresh space.

‘Saturated’ is all about seeing the world as if through the lens of a camera and so the colours are intensified and infused together to create something that feels unreal. Vivid greens, saturated reds, burnt oranges and an intense blue come together in an energetic palette that shows a complete disregard for the rules.

Mirroring the natural beauty of weathered, eroded surfaces, faded fabrics, bleached linens and chalky, earthy tones, ‘Washed’ is a quiet, contemplative palette of muted hues. Soft faded lilacs, greens, blues combine with neutral cream to create a palette anchored in the natural world.
The atmospheric ‘Midnight Garden’ trend is characterised by deep and moody tones paired with dusky highlights and is designed to be a celebration of nature at night. Taking inspiration from the evening shadows it features inky blues, warming plums and tonal navy blues, softened with wispy lilacs and neutral greys for a cosy winter scheme.

Kathryn Lloyd, our colour specialist said: “Colour is intrinsic to any interior design. Whether specifying a colour scheme for a large-scale project or working with individual clients, it’s useful to have a good understanding of the trends which are likely to shape the future of our homes and public spaces. This is why we put so much emphasis to bring together the latest colour influences.

“We get together annually to look at a diverse range of trends before distilling them down into core colour influences to provide something to suit all tastes. With the option to take as much or as little inspiration from each, there’s freedom to create a completely unique interior design with a nod to current design trends and designs.”

Our Colour Services team is on hand to offer expert assistance and advice on all aspects of colour specification. As well as providing bespoke colour cards and a colour library the team can also guide specifiers through the process of creating individual colour schemes, tailored to clients’ requirements.

Introducing 100 per cent recycled plastic containers

We’ve become the first paint manufacturer in the UK to launch paint containers made from 100 per cent recycled plastic.

The plastic 2.5 litre and 5 litre containers, which will soon be available across the Crown Paints’ family of products starting with our retail range, have been manufactured by packaging solutions expert Emballator, using 100 per cent post-consumer waste (PCW) plastic for each container.

The innovative manufacturing process will ultimately save thousands of tonnes of PCW plastic from otherwise ending up in landfill. Once sorted, the PCW plastic is turned into individual pellets which are then dyed and moulded to create the containers, with the dark grey colour making them instantly recognisable. The paint containers are also fully recyclable once empty and clean – adding to their sustainability credentials.

Julie Entwistle, our packaging buyer said: “We’ve invested a great deal in creating this innovative new packaging and have worked closely with the Emballator team to create a product which is made entirely from recycled plastic. This marks a significant improvement to the plastic paint containers manufactured from 25 per cent recycled plastic which are currently available in the UK.”

Clean and hygienic paint solutions from Crown Trade

As well as providing colour, paint should also provide protection which is why we’ve extended our Clean Extreme range to offer specifiers a trio of high performance products to help combat the common problems of dirt, mould and bacteria.

The range offers three effective solutions to creating clean and hygienic surfaces and features Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt, Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt and Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt. The full Clean Extreme range is also available in a high performance, stain-resistant, durable and washable Acrylic Eggshell mid sheen finish.

For surfaces that need to be hygienically clean, such as healthcare facilities, our Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt provides a high quality anti-bacterial finish, enhanced through the use of the independently tested SteriTouch® silver ion technology which protects against the growth of bacteria. As well as being stain resistant, Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt has been specifically formulated to withstand rigorous cleaning and scrubbing to give extra peace of mind.

Specifically developed to help minimise maintenance requirements in high traffic areas,
our Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt has an impressive durability level of 10,000 scrubs and has been specifically developed to retain its flat matt appearance and ‘just painted’ appeal even after rigorous cleaning. Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt has also been independently tested to ISO 11998 Class 1 scrub rating for guaranteed results. Recently voted ‘Best Trade Durable Matt in the Market’ by the Decorators Forum - an online hub for thousands of professional painters and decorators across the UK - Clean Extreme offers a high performance, low maintenance finish that is also easy to apply.

For areas prone to condensation such as kitchens and bathrooms as well as void properties, our Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt can offer long lasting protection from unsightly and unhygienic mould. Combining a high opacity matt formulation with a built in fungicide that puts a stop to mould growth on the paint film, unlike other anti-mould paints on the market, Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt is highly resistant to stains and can be repeatedly cleaned and scrubbed without any detriment to the finish.

What’s more, the full Clean Extreme range is available in hundreds of tinted colours to help create stylish and attractive décor schemes that are both colourful and clean.

Crown Paints Exterior colour book seeks to educate and inspire

We’ve launched a new Exterior Colour Book as a key aid for specifiers and designers.

The Exterior Colour Book has been created by our in-house Colour Service to offer guidance and inspiration for exterior decoration projects and includes details on our Sandtex Trade and Sadolin product ranges.

When selecting colour schemes for exterior projects, personal preference is sometimes secondary to concerns such as impact on the local context and the relevant planning regulations. That’s why the Exterior Colour Book provides information about the built environment, covering topics such as historical styles, geology and local materials, regional colours and colour application.

As well as information about how colour interplays with the surrounding environment and architectural styles, the Exterior Colour Book includes details of how colour influences people’s sense of place and even their mood.

Commenting on the launch of the Exterior Colour Book, Kathryn Lloyd Crown Paints’ colour specialist said: “The Colour Book is a helpful aid for any designers or specifiers tasked with decorating the exterior of buildings and outdoor environments who are looking for colour inspiration. But we know that exterior design goes beyond simple colour palettes to consider the context and history of the space.

“For example, using a bright saturated colour on a historic building can be jarring, while using darker colours on large solid structures can make them appear heavy or oppressive. Our Exterior Colour Book addresses all these issues and more, making it easier for specifiers to make a considered choice.”

Our Colour Services team is on hand to offer expert assistance and advice on all aspects of colour specification, including considerations about colour psychology, information on how to meet specific building regulations and the latest colour trends. As well as providing bespoke colour cards and a colour library the team can also guide specifiers through the process of devising individual colour schemes, using computer aided design where appropriate.

Crown Paints Exterior colour book seeks to educate and inspire

Contact Us
