Introduction to Colour

When it comes to choosing colour, there are no set rules but there are many factors to take into consideration. It’s important to consider elements such as the age of the building, the room’s function, space, size, surface texture and critically, the amount of available light, texture and, critically, the amount of light, as all of these elements contribute to changing the appearance of colours. It’s the careful consideration of all of these elements which will determine a successful colour scheme.

Before you make your final colour choice, consider the following questions:

  • What is the room to be used for?
  • Is a particular mood or atmosphere required?
  • Is there a good source of natural light and what type of artificial light is there?
  • What direction does the room face – north, south, east or west?
  • What is the size of the space? Does it feel too large or too small and is the space proportional?
  • Will existing furnishings remain?
